Let me introduce myself and share my story of how I became a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP). I’m Mallory Moore, I am a speech-language pathologist in Springfield, Missouri. I have been practicing for 12 years.
Golf Scholarship
I started my journey at Missouri State University on a golf scholarship, playing for Coach Kevin Kane. As a student-athlete, the University made sure that our priorities were that we were students first and foremost. They mandated that all new athletes attend the “Major’s Fair,” an event where we could learn about various majors and programs.
Going into college, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to study. But I considered biomedical sciences, dentistry, and the communication department. I had so many interests! I wanted something that would be fulfilling, allow me to be creative and compliment my love for learning.
Change Of Course To Speech Language Pathologist
That’s when I stumbled upon the Communication Sciences and Disorders and the Social Work booths, located in the far back corner of the room. Both caught my attention! I decided to take the Intro Course to CSD the next semester. The course was fascinating, and I couldn’t wait to share what I had learned with my best friend and parents after every single class.
From then on, I was hooked! I found my passion and became a Speech-Language Pathologist. Today, I get to use my creativity and love for discovery to help others communicate effectively and return to eating. Most people are surprised when I say I would rather be doing my job versus golfing! But it’s not just a job; it’s my calling, and I am so thankful!
